The name "Sturnidae" comes from the Latin word for starling, sturnus . Many Asian species, particularly the larger ones, are called mynas , and many African species are known as glossy starlings because of their iridescent plumage . The common starling or European starling (Sturnus vulgaris), also known simply as the starling in the British Isles, is a medium-sized passerine bird in the starling family, Sturnidae. It is about 20 cm (8 in) long and has glossy black plumage with a metallic sheen, which is speckled with white at some times of year. Starlings are conspicuous and widespread in the UK, occurring everywhere except for the highest parts of the Scottish Highlands. They are most abundant in southern England and are more thinly distributed in upland areas with moorland.

When it comes to bird watching I am a big fan of bird identification, ageing and sexing birds as well as other scientific issues.

Starlings are one of few birds that will happily tolerate and thrive in densely populated urban and suburban areas, unaffected by anthropological disturbances. As cavity nesters, their ability to readily adapt to their surroundings means that they will exploit any hole and call it home, whether roof junctions, crevasses, vents, etc. (i.e. places that are the most difficult for humans to access).

Starlings gather in massive flocks (some numbering tens of thousands) and these aggressive birds will drive out other native bird species often taking over the other birds' existing nests. Common grackles are about 12" long and have green/blue or purple tinged black plumage with a glossy purplish head, neck and checst. The violet-backed starling is a common bird in Sub-Saharan Africa, occurring in most locations with the exception of the dense rainforest of the Congo Basin, and the more arid parts of southwestern Africa.

European starlings are noisy birds that do serious harm to humans, pets, and livestock. These pest birds can transmit parasites, like mites, fleas, and bedbugs, as well as potentially fatal diseases, including histoplasmosis, salmonellosis, toxoplasmosis, and chlamydiosis.
